Budget Cap Rejected for 2015 Season

A budget cap previously proposed for the 2015 season, set at €150 million, in order to give the smaller teams a better chance at building a competitive car, was rejected on Wednesday by the Strategy Group that proposed the idea. This Strategy Group consists of Red Bull, Ferrari, McLaren, Mercedes, Lotus, and Williams, the biggest teams in Formula 1. The smaller teams that proposed the idea, Sauber, Force India, Caterham, and Marussia, are outraged at the rejection of the idea because if the budget cap is not imposed, they will have even less of a chance at having a successful season next year.

These smaller teams are also upset because none of them are on the committee that make these decisions, so they have no say in a rule change that could help them out a lot. All the biggest teams with the largest budgets are on the Strategy Group that makes the decision on rule changes and it is hard to imagine any of them being in favor of a budget cap for next season, a rule change that would make their cars less competitive, something no one would want.

This decision also increases the gap between the competition, with the big five teams, Ferrari, Red Bull, McLaren, Mercedes, and Lotus, being able to build faster and more competitive cars than the small teams like Caterham, Marussia, and Force India.

I, personally, am not in favor of the budget cap because I would like to see more competitive cars and if the smaller teams can not make enough money to support a Formula 1 car, then they simply should not be in Formula 1. Formula 1 is the pinnacle of motorsports and should only have the fastest cars in the world on the grid. A budget cap would reduce the performance of the cars because teams would have to make sacrifices in order to stay within the budget, making for slower cars. A budget cap should not be added to Formula 1 and despite what the smaller teams think, the Strategy Group made the right decision.
